Natalie's Cambodia Trip with Open Heart International
Story
Hi, it's Natalie Vinton here,
Recently, after setting up my own business I now have more opportunity to give back and start to fulfill some dreams of mine - which includes helping children with life-threatening conditions, both in Australia and overseas. My son is alive today because of Australia's amazing health care system which saved his life when he was born extremely premature, and it's something I will always be grateful for.
That's why I am volunteering with Open Heart International, and using my time and skills to help in countries less fortunate. In a couple of weeks I will be travelling to Cambodia's Angkor Hospital for Children to work as a play therapist and to assist the Open Heart International surgery team in any way I can.
The team consists of approximately 30 Australian doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and extras like me. There are 2-3 surgeries planned each day with the intention of training and providing a transference of skills to the Cambodian team so they can continue to carry on the great work when we head home.
In 2016, Open Heart International celebrates 30 years! In excess of 150 project visits have been coordinated and over 5,550 lives have been transformed!
My role in the team is play therapist. This means that I will be helping to support the children throughout their recovery after open heart surgery.
